Detecting Small Contraband in a Big Way

Contraband has been an issue in correction facilities for ages. As inmates, and those who help them, become more sophisticated in their contraband smuggling, it’s imperative that technology stays ahead of them. Expertly designed and engineered detection technology adds a critically important layer of security — one that detects much smaller, concealed contraband than other traditional detection systems.

FINDING CONTRABAND ONCE INSIDE

Traditionally, detection technology has been used at entrances and fixed points to stop contraband from getting into correctional facilities, but we must devote equal attention and effort to getting contraband out once it’s inside. That’s where multiple layers of security, including technology designed for small contraband, come into play.

HOW SMALL IS SMALL?

The most advanced detection technologies can detect contraband as small as a staple and easily detect hair pins, safety pins, handcuff keys, lighters, small knives, drill bits, needles, cellphones, and other contraband not easily detected by walk-through metal detectors or other technologies.

EASY TO KEEP INMATES GUESSING

Portability equals versatility and that is the key to keeping inmates guessing. Portable solutions are easily moved and
deployed to conduct surprise screenings that are difficult to plan around. Portability means bringing the system to inmates
so they never quite know when or where to expect a screening.

SCREEN INMATE BELONGINGS

While screening inmates’ bodies is job one, equally important is screening their belongings. Advanced detection technologies make it easier to detect small contraband in mattresses, laundry bags, and other personal belongings. In fact, it’s more common to find razor blades, sewing needles and tattoo needles in
mattresses than on the person.

PROVEN, REAL WORLD PERFORMANCE

The best technologies are solutions that have been through the unique and extreme conditions of prisons and jails throughout the world. Technology should fit the purpose for correction facilities and be built with ruggedization to withstand these environments.

THE VALUE OF DATA & ANALYTICS

How intelligence data meets compliance needs and supports incident reporting must be a consideration in any contraband detection technology chosen. Advanced detection systems use analytics to improve operations, including small contraband event logging and statistics that indicate whether the equipment is being used properly or if sensitivity has been tampered with, among other insights.
